the WiTNESS series
The WiTNESS series is driven by a fascination for the organic way in which movement is generated when someone is dancing in an authentic state with their eyes closed. Authentic Movement (AM) can be traced back to the 1950s and was started by Mary Starks Whitehouse, who said “When the movement was simple and inevitable, not to be changed no matter how limited or partial, it became what I called ‘authentic’”. It is that element of truth and the experience of existing in the moment that captures the imagination and draws you into the dancers’ personal world.
INwitness
an exploration of authentic movement and connection to space as projected landscapes dance across the wall, intrinsically linked to the body in motion.
wItness bench: this performance piece is designed to trigger awareness of the large number of vulnerable people in our ostensibly affluent society. You will find the performer anchored to a bench, eyes closed; an exposed moment in movement. ‘wItness bench’ challenges you to stop and observe as a fragile inner world unfolds. Many of us experience the numbness of vulnerability, yet we often travel through life without noticing it in others.
